UNITY HOUSE
GETS $1M GRANT
Unity House, a nonprofit community services agency based in Troy,
N.Y., will get more than $1 million for a five-year pilot program
to help chronically homeless adults and families.
The grant,
from the Charitable Leadership Foundation of Clifton Park, will
allow Unity House to provide enhanced services and housing for
70 people. Clients will have case managers for weekly support,
as well as access to peer counselors and psychiatric nurse practitioners,
in their own homes and at flexible hours. In addition to the main
grant of about $1.04, the foundation will pay $258,000 to follow
the project and report on its effectiveness. The state University
at Albany's School of Social Welfare will conduct the three-year
study.
"Providing
an enhanced Supported Housing Program to these chronically homeless
families and individuals will, hopefully, improve their quality
of life and the quality of life in our communities," said
William Dessingue, a program officer with the Charitable Leadership
Foundation, in a release.
The goal of
the program is to give chronically homeless participants the skills
they need to remain in permanent housing, said Cathy Bowen, service
director for the Supported Housing Program. Sign up to receive

"It is exciting to be able to provide consumer-driven services
that allow for such flexibility," Bowen said.
The primary
causes of homelessness for her clients are lack of affordable
housing, lack of living wage jobs or sufficient income, lack of
adequate health and supportive services, chronic substance abuse,
or domestic violence, Bowen said.
Other organizations
to be involved with the project include the Rensselaer County
Department of Mental Health/Unified Services, the state Office
of Mental Health, Troy Homeless Services Collaborate members (Bethany
Hospitality Center, Catholic Charities, Joseph's House, Troy Area
United Ministries and the Troy-Cohoes YWCA), Samaritan Hospital
and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
