Food Stamp
Program
Unity House is one of 45 community-based agencies funded
with a Nutrition Outreach and Education Program grant by the Nutrition
Consortium of New York State. Unity House is in a unique position
to conduct outreach for the Food Stamp Program because of its
intimate knowledge of the needs of local people and how to reach
potentially eligible groups such as low-income senior citizens
and working families with children.
Unity House conducts outreach services to low income households
in Rensselaer County including the elderly, working poor, immigrants,
domestic violence victims, people living with HIV/AIDS and people
living with disabilities such as mental illness, substance abuse,
and mental retardation. The goal of this outreach is to encourage
individuals to apply for the federally-funded food stamp program.
Once qualified, consumers are given an EBT (Electronic Benefit
Transfer) card that enables them to use their monthly food stamp
benefits at the checkout counter just like an ATM debit card.
The Food Stamp Program is supervised by the Nutrition Consortium
of New York State and administered by the local Department of
Social Services. To be eligible, you must be a Rensselaer county
resident and qualify based on your income level. The criteria
vary depending on services needed. To find out if you are eligible
for the food stamp program, please contact Mary Berry at 518-272-2352.

Harvest for the
Holidays
Not every
child is lucky enough to have a lunch bag filled with good, nutritious
food to eat. Whats worse, every day there are children in
our community who go to bed hungry--pretty shocking in a country
as affluent as ours.
The autumn
is the time of year when many of us are planning a sumptuous Thanksgiving
Day meal to share with family and friends. And, fast on the heels
of Thanksgiving is the holiday season with its promise of gift-giving
and more family feasts.
You can make
this holiday special for those in our community
who are struggling to make ends meet. Our Harvest for the Holidays
appeal provides grocery bags filled with all the fixings to prepare
festive, nutritious holiday meals for a family--just like you
do
for yours.
Heres
what your donation can provide:
$35 will provide a bountiful holiday meal for a family of four.
$70 will feed two local families of four this holiday season.
$175 will bring holiday food and hope to five families at Christmas.
$385 will provide a festive holiday for 11 single parents and
their children.
While you
begin to make your own special seasonal preparations, please make
a donation to Unity Houses annual Harvest for the Holidays
program.
